In general, a properly sized stick should allow the goaltender to keep the blade of the stick flush on the ice centered between the toes of the pads, with the blocker resting slightly onto the outer edge of the pad.
It is a popular misconception that there is a direct relationship between the height of a goalie and the paddle length of the stick. Our stick manufacturer has been making custom goalie sticks for professional goalies for decades, and there have been 6'2” goalies using a 24” paddle and 5'10” goalies using a 27” paddle. In the “NEW WORLD” of goaltending, the stick is used as more of a “deflecting device” (to deflect pucks to the corners) than a stopping device. The reason is that well over 90% of saves are made while a goalie is on their knees. It really comes down to the goalie’s comfort level and how far in front of their pads a goalie wants their stick blade when the puck makes contact in their “A” stopping position. Some goalies like the blade closer or further from their body to protect the “SIX and SEVEN Hole” (under your arms), which becomes an issue when you try to deflect the puck on your knees.
See the chart below on the specifics of each blade pattern that we offer.
